Hi, while trying to fix bug #608 on a windows pc, I ran into a compile error.
The machine uses cygwin, with a recent g++ compiler (3.4.4). Seems like some
short variable names prefixed by an underscore are used/defined internally by
the compiler.

Fix bug #628. Compile error on MS Windows/cygwin. Fixed in r30021.
