I was wondering what leads to the choice of TAO instead of omniorb
(and the other way around).

In my case, I tried TAO and then went to omniorb because I had the
feeling that it was a lot less bloated -- and a lot easier to compile if
you have to do it yourself -- than TAO. Not real good reason, as you can
see.
